How Laser Hair Removal Works

The laser targets pigment granules in the hair (melanin) to destroy the hair follicle. The pigmented hair absorbs the laser energy and follows the shaft to the surrounding follicle (the darker the hair, the better the results of damaging the follicle). The heat build-up caused by the absorption of energy by the hair creates follicle damage and retards and prevents future hair production. While individual results vary, it takes approximately 8 to 10 sessions to achieve permanent hair reduction.

Laser Hair Removal Session

Hair removal begins by shaving the area to be treated. Next, a cold gel is applied to help absorb heat energy away from the skin. Laser light is applied to the skin and picked up by the hairs and directed to the follicle. The first few sessions can be uncomfortable. Many describe the experience as hot needles poking the skin. The discomfort instantly goes away after the laser is applied, but a prescription anesthetic cream can be ordered and ice applied to reduce your comfort. The discomfort decreases as hairs become less coarse with each subsequent treatment. When the session is complete, a light cream is applied to reduce the sensation of the treatment and also serves as an antibiotic.

Keep Hairs From Growing Back

Many patients perform maintenance sessions a few times a year to keep hair growth to a minimum after completing the initial treatment prescribed to you. Hair loss may only be temporary and complete re-growth may occur. The complete re-growth is generally seen in people with very light or blonde hair.
